Winter tire changeover: What’s the best timing?

Apr 13, 2019 | 8:00 AM

It might not be the sort of dash to the local tire centre that happens in the fall but P.A. motorists are now making the move away from their seasonal treads.

However, despite the warming temperatures, there’s always the possibility of a late winter snowfall.

Colin Fraser the owner of Prince Albert OK Tire, suggested it can be tough for motorists to time things just right.

“It’s always a difficult decision to change over the tires, especially when it gets really warm early,” Fraser said. “You want to have your (winter) tires off when we get a sustained temperature of 7 Celsius.”

As we make our way through April, the threat of snow does diminish significantly.

Rick Erickson, the manager of Kal Tire in P.A. explained why you shouldn’t drive winter tires all year round.

“The compounds used make the winter tires much softer for traction in colder temperatures, but if you keep using them into the warmer weather you’ll be wearing them prematurely,” he said.

He noted some people leave it until June or July to change to summers or all seasons and that’s too late if you’re looking for maximum wear.

On another note this is the time for flat tires, as sharp debris on the roads is freed up from the snow and ice.

The city of P.A. has started street sweeping, although work on residential streets is not expected to get underway for three more weeks.
