Sask. Poly laying off more than a dozen people

Apr 11, 2019 | 5:32 PM

Nineteen people across the province are losing their jobs at Saskatchewan Polytechnic.

The school said in a statement that it’s the result of a yearly operational review ensuring “program alignment with current market demand, operating efficiencies, and budget accountabilities.”

In the spring budget, the provincial government left post-secondary funding at the same level as last year. Other schools have said they’ll have to make adjustments to cope – the University of Saskatchewan recently announced a tuition hike – But Sask. Poly didn’t say whether the provincial budget was a factor in its decision.

Some of the layoffs are academic, though most are professional service employees. The affected employees are both full and part-time workers and are employed at the school’s campuses across the province.

Sask. Poly said the employees represent less than one per cent of the school’s workforce.
