Council approves Lake Estates rezoning

Prince Albert city council has approved rezoning a patch of park land in an upscale gated community on the city’s south side as developers plan for construction of a set of rental fourplexes.

City councillors approved the request from developers with Lake Estates on South Hill to rezone a .66 acre parcel of land to allow for multi-residential development. The approval was the final step in the project, which will see 40 rental units built in the area.

The developers had previously gotten approval from city council to buy back the patch of land for $1 after the city determined it wasn’t needed for a new storm pond.

The development had seen some opposition from residents who worried the rental units would affect the value of their homes and reduce the amount of park space in the area. Several residents wrote letters against the idea and attended a public hearing about the sale.

Another public hearing was held at city hall Monday over rezoning of the land from park space, but only two residents attended to ask about the location of a fence near the planned rental properties. There was no other discussion on the issue before the rezoning passed three readings.

Ward 8 City Coun. Ted Zurakowski represents the area and said more development in the city is a good thing.

“I think it’s an exciting project moving forward at a time in the province [when] a lot of development isn’t moving forward,” Zurakowski said. “I’m excited to see this project moving forward; it’s going to be great for the city.”
