City gets behind organ donation movement

Mayor Greg Dionne has proclaimed April 7, Green Shirt Day in Prince Albert.

Green Shirt Day’s goal is to promote organ donation and honour the memory of Humboldt Bronco Logan Boulet.

Before the accident, Boulet had signed up as an organ donor. Logan died in the crash but, per his request, his organs were saved and used to help six people.

“Even in death, he sacrificed and left a legacy.” Mayor Greg Dionne

In the month that followed the crash nearly 100,000 Canadians registered as organ donors.

“It was a terrible thing when Logan lost his life. He gave up six organs to help other people,” Dionne told paNOW. “Even in death, he sacrificed and left a legacy.”

Dionne said Boulet’s sacrifice is why it’s important for the city to take part in Green Shirt Day.

“When you look at the sacrifices Logan made, the inspiration he’s given so many people. At the end of the day, he saved lots of lives,” Dionne said. “I think it’s prudent on us to take part, to help promote that.”

This Sunday, the Art Hauser Center will be filled with green jerseys as the Prince Albert Raiders take on the Saskatoon Blades. Dionne hopes it will be an opportunity for those gathered to discuss this important campaign.

“Anything to help highlight the situation and get people to commit to being a donor will help other people, so it’s great event to involved in,” Dionne said.

In a release, the city encouraged all city staff and Prince Albert residents to participate in Green Shirt Day on Monday as well, by wearing green and signing up as an organ donor.

The province also recognized April 7, as a day to participate in the movement.
