Annual Chili Cook-off raises money for Children’s Haven

The weather outside this weekend may have been slightly colder than the last few Prince Albert has experienced, but there was a good way to stay warm.

The 31st annual Power99 FM Chili Championships run in conjunction with the local Jim Pattison Broadcast Group radio station, took place at Plaza 88 Saturday, and saw dozens of teams competing to make the tastiest chili, while raising money for a good cause.

All proceeds from the annual event were donated to the Prince Albert’s Children’s Haven, which cares for children at times when their family may not be able to do so. Program Director Amanda Robertson said an event like this goes a long way.

“All the money raised today at this event goes directly to the children that come through our door,” said Robertson.

“Last year we had a little more than the year before, which was about 6,000 children in one year, so that’s a lot of milk, formula and diapers. So yeah, we’re just here to have a good time at a family event and raise money for a good cause in Prince Albert.”

Children’s Haven is a 24 hour per day child crisis centre, which is operated for families in the area to access for things like hospital visits, at times when there are no safe alternatives to provide care for children.

Bottomless bowls of chili were available to the public for $5, with a children’s area containing numerous activities also made available.

Prince Albert Canadian Tire owner, Malcom Jenkins donated six insta-pots as prizes for the top teams in the competition.

The celebrity chili judging panel consisted of Police Chief Jon Bergen, Paul Lomheim from the Northern Lights Casino and Power 99 FM radio personality Andy Cohen.

By the end of the mouth-watering, and sometimes eye-watering consumption it was the culinary teams of PA Alarm Systems, Tik Tok and Mr Mikes Steak House Casual who won the nod from the public as having the best-tasting chili.

And after an afternoon of sometimes brow-sweating activity, the bottom line is the P.A’s Children’s Haven got to benefit from the fruits of everyone’s labour in the kitchen and the generosity of the community.
