Opening ceremonies herald 5th annual Senator’s Cup

Mar 30, 2019 | 5:00 PM

Prince Albert hockey fans will be treated to a special bout this weekend, with the return of the fifth annual Senator’s Cup.

The event, which features a $20,000 grand prize this year, is an all First Nations and Metis community hockey tournament at the Art Hauser Centre put on by the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC).

It was created in part to honour the PAGC senators, who are hockey fans, but also to entertain and inspire.

Tami McKenzie, head organizer for the Senator’s cup with the PAGC, said it was a great weekend to be a hockey fan in Prince Albert.

“This is the fifth year we’ve had this tournament. This year we have the most teams that we’ve ever had with 12 and it’s just getting bigger and better every year,” said McKenzie.

“It’s just a weekend to celebrate and recognize our past and current Senators at the PAGC and have a good time. We have 22 hockey games throughout the weekend so it should be really good.”

The action started Friday afternoon and will continue through Sunday evening at 7 p.m. when the final is played.

The opening ceremonies featured Chiefs, Senators and Dignitaries from the surrounding areas as well as songs performed by a drum group, followed by the ceremonial puck drop.
