WINDSOR, Ont. — Federal Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains says he’ll travel to Windsor Saturday to offer support to workers facing layoffs by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V.

The company announced Thursday it would cut the third shift at its Windsor plant at the end of September at a loss of about 1,500 jobs.

Bains says in a statement he is “very disappointed” by the news and is committed to fighting for their jobs.

Unifor Local 444 president Dave Cassidy said Thursday that the union would need all levels of government support going forward.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said in a statement that the provincial government will “fight tooth and nail” to protect auto worker jobs in Windsor.

FCA said it was cutting the shift at the minivan plant to better align production with global demand.
