Saskatchewan Indigenous Film Goes National

Sask Indigenous Filmmakers to have short film make its World Premiere at 2019 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival.

Saskatchewan made film, ​ahkâmêyimo nitânis / Keep Going My Daughter​ will have its world premiere at the 2019 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto,ON.

This short film was over a year in the making by two Indigenous filmmakers from Regina, SK; producer, Chris Tyrone Ross (​RezX​) and director, Candy Fox (​Backroads​).

Both were part of the 2018/19 IndigiDocs program run by the National Screen Institute (NSI),which gives successful applicants the opportunity to shoot a short documentary that will air on APTN and The Documentary channel in 2020.

​ahkâmêyimo nitânis​ is a poetic and hopeful film about two young parents, Colby Tootoosis and Andrea Landry, and their dreams for their daughter’s future narrated through the journals they’ve written to her before she was born.

The filmmakers wanted to make a film that reflected the Indigenous resurgence of knowledge and kinship of our generation.

What was created is a powerful statement about raising and protecting our Indigenous children in today’s current environment.

Candy and Chris would like to acknowledge and thank Andrea and Colby for sharing their wisdom and beautiful stories with us. As well, much gratitude goes to our team members who brought such skill and expertise to the making of the project; Aaron Bernakevitch, Jackie Dzuba, David Roman, Muskwa Lerat, Elian Mikkola, Tony Manolikakis,and Cory Rizos.

A special thanks to everyone at the National Screen Institute and the National Film Board of Canada, as well as mentors Shane Belcourt and Michelle Latimer.The filmmakers will be hosting a fundraising event. .
