P.A. family prepares to face another sad anniversary

Mar 27, 2019 | 8:00 AM

Another year has passed and a Prince Albert woman says she is no closer to finding out who killed her younger brother.

John Moses Bird, 49, was struck and killed by a vehicle April 3, 2011. At the time of his death in the early morning hours, Bird was walking on the highway that runs through the Montreal Lake Cree Nation. Gloria Naytowhow, Bird’s older sister, said the past eight years have been very frustrating for the family.

“We are always looking for answers and nobody has come forward,” she said.

Naytowhow believes there is someone out there with information about her brother’s death. (submitted photo/Gloria Naytowhow)

Naytowhow said she could still recall the phone call she received from her sister informing her something bad happened to their brother. Naytowhow then instantly grabbed the keys to her vehicle and headed for Montreal Lake.

“It was getting to be daylight when we got to Montreal Lake and we saw his body lying on the road,” she said.

Bird’s birthday happened to be on the day he died and so Naytowhow said every birthday and Christmas since is emotional for the family. Naytowhow said she always enjoyed the times when her brother came to visit.

“He used to visit us all the time, each and every one of his sisters. He would come and stay the night just to spend time with us,” she said.

When Bird’s body was discovered, several items of black plastic were found around him. At the time, investigators believed they may have come from the front bumper of the vehicle. RCMP Cpl. Rob King told paNOW the case remains active and encouraged anyone with information to contact either their local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
