Council awards tender for design of new raw water pump house

Prince Albert city councillors have selected an engineering firm to design a new raw water pump house in the city, voting to go ahead with planning for a new facility at a cost of nearly $380,000.

Local councillors voted last week to award the planning, design and construction inspection to Aecom Canada Ltd. out of Saskatoon for $378,900 plus taxes.

The pump house, which moves water from the North Saskatchewan River to the city’s water treatment plant, is in bad shape, council heard last fall. Although there have been upgrades over the years, the oldest portion of the pump house dates back to the 1920s.

City administrators told councillors last fall that the cost to upgrade the pump house is more than the cost of building a new facility. Councillors expressed surprise at the state of the facility, and its various structural, mechanical and electrical issues.

Money for the design of the pump house was approved as part of the city’s 2019 budget. The cost to build the new facility is estimated to be about $4.54 million.
