Wesmor students walk the runway ahead of graduation

Students at Prince Albert’s Wesmor Community High School walked the runway Thursday, as a part of their annual fashion show.

The event, which showcased a variety of women’s gowns as well as men’s pieces, is part of a program at Wesmor that provides affordable formal wear for students graduating high school in June. The dresses are sold at a reduced cost to students at the school, from around the city and surrounding areas.

Gina Sinoski, Principal of Wesmor High School, said the event was created by a group of teachers who wished to help students that lacked the means to purchase graduation wear.

“These kids get the opportunity to shine on a day they really worked hard for,” said Sinoski.

“We find this is the event that gets our grads excited and engaged …this gets them saying ‘oh I can see the end’.”

Students selected to model in the fashion show are those who have exhibited exemplary standards, and who will be graduating on time, according to Sinoski.

“The models are all graduating students, and we have many more that apply to be models,” said Sinoski. “The criteria is things like coming to school, doing their job and actively being involved in the school. It gives them something to aspire to.”

The fashion models had their hair done at no charge and had first pick of all the outfits being put on show.

Grade 12 student, Karlee Jensen-Kress, said she was excited to be a part of things.

“It was a really fantastic experience. We got to go to Sask Polytech to get our hair done, then we came back and had our makeup done,” said Jensen-Kress.

“Wesmor is one of the reasons I’m graduating and why I have confidence; it’s the reason I was able to get up on the stage,” she said.

Grade 12 students Montana Bird and Lexus Waditaka, who also modelled in the show, added that the teachers at Wesmor had pushed the students to do their best, and they were grateful for their teaching style and their supportive attitude.

Those interested in donating graduation wear can contact administration, or deliver the clothing to Wesmor Community High School.
