Raiders recognized with Eastern Conference awards

Five Raiders were recognized on Wednesday as the Western Hockey League announced the 2019 award winners and all-star teams from the Eastern and Western Conferences.

Goaltender Ian Scott saw his name come up twice as the Eastern Conference goaltender of the year and Eastern Conference first team all-star goaltender. Scott led the entire Eastern Conference with a 1.83 goals against average, 0.932 save percentage, and a total of 38 wins. Scott’s Western Conference counterpart is Everett Silvertips goaltender Dustin Wolf, who finished first in the league in every category except for shutouts, which Scott led with eight.

Joining Scott as a first team all-star was forward Brett Leason after his breakout year. Leason finished with 36 goals and 89 points, which was good for eighth league-wide. The Calgary native has forced himself into the NHL draft conversation after a season that saw him represent the Raiders at the Canada-Russia series, Top Prospects Game, and World Junior Championships.

Named to the second all-star team in the Eastern Conference was defenceman Brayden Pachal with a career-best 51 point season to go with an absurd +76 rating. Pachal was tied for sixth among defenders with 15 goals, and tied for eighth in points.

Off the ice, the Raiders were recognized on two fronts as Head Coach Marc Habscheid was named Eastern Conference Coach of the Year, and General Manager Curtis Hunt was named Eastern Conference Executive of the Year. The two men have been in their respective for the past four seasons, and helped the team to a record of 54-10-2-2 this year.

The Raiders recorded the highest win total seen in the WHL since the Kelowna Rockets picked up 57 victories in 2013-14, playing four more games.

The team also received the Scotty Munro Trophy as regular season champions, with commissioner Ron Robison in the building to present the hardware ahead of Saturday night’s regular season finale against Saskatoon.
