Food bank happy to get donation

The Prince Albert Food Bank has received a large donation from a local business.

Tuesday morning Wes Erlendson, the owner of Safeway in P.A., presented Kerry Ramsdell, operations manager of the food bank with store gift cards totaling $8,660.

Ramsdell told paNOW the donation is appreciated by her organization.

“It’s everything, it’s great, we can purchase food that we need to put into the hampers for the clientele, this means everything, it’s wonderful,” she said.

Ramsdell explained the money will help the food bank provide the people who come through their doors with some specific food items.

“A lot of the canned stuff, like your fruits, veg, beans, canned meat, that’s a big ticket item,” she said.

The donation is also appreciated as according to Ramsdell, the number of people coming to the food bank for help is steady.

“It hasn’t slowed down, there’s always more coming,” she said.

The store was fundraising for the first two weeks in December. The donations were collected by the sale of food hampers and donations were collected at the checkout.

For his part, Erlendson gives much of the credit for the fundraising effort to his employees, specifically those working at the front.

“If the cashiers don’t ask, customers don’t know there’s an opportunity to give and support this initiative,” he said.

Erlendson said the food bank is a good organization to support and his store’s efforts fit in with the greater mission of Sobey’s across Canada, where stores donated over $1 million to local food banks. He added the support from customers was nice to see.

“[I] just want to pass on my thanks to our customers for embracing this opportunity to support the community as well,” he said.
