Sleep Country set to open shop in Prince Albert

Another national brand is setting up shop in Prince Albert.

Sleep Country will be located at the old Bluenotes’ store at Cornerstone. Work is currently underway to refurbish the 8,500 square foot space for the mattress retailer with the goal of opening the second week of April. There will be up to five employees.

“Prince Albert has been a market we’ve been looking at for quite some time,” VP of Real Estate and Business Development Phil Besner told paNOW.” We ramped up that search in 2017 in conjunction with Sears closing.”

Besner said the city and region was attractive to the company.

“The demographics alone – so the population and disposable income – makes sense,” he said. “Some of our competitors are operating and we think there’s market share for us that’s available.”

He noted the 40,000 population and the added reach beyond the city would make it “a very good market for us.”

Sleep Country generated over $600 million in revenue in 2018 and opened 17 new stores while renovating or relocating 32 others. It has 155 stores in total. The Prince Albert location will be one of up to 12 new ones the company plans this year and Besner said it was exciting to be part of the city’s growing retail landscape.

“I think any time a national retailer joins any major shopping node within any community it’s quite exciting for that community, and we hope that it contributes and other people want to join who aren’t there today,” he said.
