Piapot First Nation planning new development in P.A.

A Regina-area First Nation is planning to build a new gas bar and retail store on Prince Albert’s west side.

Construction is set to begin this spring on what is currently an empty lot at 600 17 St. W. The Piapot First Nation, located at Zehner, about 20 minutes outside of Regina, bought the lot in 2017.

Prince Albert City Council approved a servicing agreement last month on the development. The property will become urban reserve land as part of the process. It’s the first business venture for the Piapot First Nation in Prince Albert.

City Planning Director Craig Guidinger said the servicing agreement is a standard process that outlines the services that will be provided once the new gas bar and convenience store is open.

“It’s our understanding that they’ll be starting construction in the spring, so we’re looking forward to that,” Guidinger said. “It’s good for the neighbourhood, it’s good for the city, this is another option for convenience and filling up your vehicles and to have them evenly dispersed throughout the city is definitely a positive thing for us.”

No one from the Piapot First Nation returned calls for comment on the development.
