A well respected member of Saskatchewan’s Métis community has passed away.

Felix Mathieu, President of Métis Local Seven for the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan (MNS) was 64 when he passed away late last week. Sherry McLennan, regional director of Western Region II, said she has many fond memories of Mathieu.

“He was a quiet man in the political world but when he had something to say, he said it with great intention and he was always there to work for the people in local seven,” she said.

Mathieu was born in Meadow Lake but spent the majority of his life in Prince Albert. McLennan said Mathieu will be missed by the people he served and helped. Hunting and fishing were among the issues Mathieu was most passionate about, but McLennan added he had his ears open for anyone who had concerns.

“He just wanted to help out the people who had brought issues to him and he would in turn bring them to the table,” she said.

Former MNS President Robert Doucette knew Mathieu through the numerous meetings they attended together. Doucette said Mathieu was a true Métis patriot.

“It’s really sad that Felix has passed on but I think to remember people in a good way for the good things they done, is the appropriate thing to do,” he said.

In addition to his work for the MNS, Mathieu was also a volunteer with minor hockey and was self-employed as a fish salesperson, which would require him to drive to all corners of the province. Adam Beaulac, manager at Bev’s Fish and Seafood in Prince Albert, knew Mathieu for over 15 years through their dealings, and said he will always remember Mathieu’s big smile and laugh.

“He was just an awesome guy, you know. His heart was huge,” he said.

Beaulac recalled Mathieu would talk frequently about his family, and enjoyed his sense of humour.

Mathieu’s funeral is scheduled to take place Tuesday afternoon at the East End Community Hall in Prince Albert. He leaves behind two sons and a daughter, as well as number of grandchildren.
