Feds invest in projects to combat guns, gangs in Sask.

The federal government is giving the province nearly $12 million to stop gang and gun violence in Saskatchewan.

Ralph Goodale, the federal minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, announced Monday that the government is providing the province with $11.9 million in funding for projects that will deal with the issue.

In a media release, the Government of Canada said the province will receive the funding over the next five years “to reduce violent crime, make communities safer, and lessen demand on the justice system.”

“Today’s announcement demonstrates the seriousness of guns and gangs in our neighbourhoods,” Goodale said in the media release.

“By striking at the root of the guns and gangs problem in our communities, and stopping our most vulnerable youth from joining gangs in the first place, we are taking the right steps to make our communities safer,” he said.

The money for Saskatchewan is among the $214 million the federal government is making available to provinces and territories through the Gun and Gang Violence Action Fund over the next five years.
