Starlight a Bright Star for Kin Enterprises

Mar 6, 2019 | 3:13 AM

It’s always a good sign when the parking lot is almost too busy to find a place to park. That’s exactly what’s been noticed at the Starlight Restaurant in Prince Albert.

According to Executive Director, Shawn Elder, “the Starlight is not as big a secret as it used to be. Our following is getting bigger and it’s getting busier. It’s become a place to go and get everything homemade.” “The restaurant’s open 7-3pm daily, which gives a training program to 8 participants to work alongside regular staff.” “The Starlight Restaurant is an opportunity for the community to come in and see what we’re doing; what KIN Enterprises can do.” “It’s a busy place.”

Feature Beef Wellington

The Starlight Restaurant located at 457-40 Street East, Prince Albert was built 14 years ago. The Starlight serves breakfast and lunch Monday to Friday, offers a daily buffet, sells homemade baking any time of year as well provides over 1000 Meals on Wheels per month in Prince Albert. They also offer off-site evening catering and boast a 150 seat dining room available for rental and/or catered functions.

Just over a year ago, the Starlight Restaurant welcomed Chef/Restaurant Manager Rod O’Brien from Edmonton and it was a perfect fit. His multiple years of experience working in the food industry and with different kinds of people, provided him with what he needs for training and assisting his staff. “I see the future of the Starlight Restaurant as ‘wide-open’.” “Everyone here has various capabilities and abilities, when we work within that and maintain a routine, we provide products loved by all. It’s a good balance.”

Extra events allow for additional opportunities for participants

The Starlight Restaurant just recently held their annual Valentine’s Day Dinner which was a huge success. Offering two seating’s in one evening, the event was sold out and thoroughly appreciated by all. Last June, they put together a BBQ/garage/yard sale that saw over 500 people go through, and they have been anxiously planning to do it again this year.

With almost 200 participants and 70 staff members KIN Enterprises includes 3 locations in Prince Albert that serves the city, surrounding area and the north.

O’Brien continues about their food, “Our baking prices are really good and our cinnamon buns are second to none. Our burgers, sausages and fries are hand-made and we’re proud of them. They’re great.” “We’re also thinking of increasing the restaurant’s hours – having it open 1-2 evening per month. This would allow us eight more people for training purposes; and of course more hours open to the public.”

Bread pudding the final touch

And something to remember, according to Shawn Elder, “We’re a charity/non-for-profit, we still generate revenue. We buy 95 percent of our supplies within the community. Even though we are funded partially by government, we still give back to the community.”
