Mar 6, 2019 | 12:00 PM

Since she made the decision six years ago to start running competitively, Prince Albert’s Vicki Macpherson has had her mind set on running in the Boston Marathon and next month she will have the opportunity to realize that dream.

Macpherson’s time running running 42.1 km. was close to seven minutes under the required time for her age group.

“I’ve watched the Boston Marathon for years and I thought maybe one day I could do it, so for the last three years for sure that has been my goal every marathon I ran, I was looking for runs that were Boston qualifiers,” she said.

Qualifying for the Boston Marathon is no small feat, with runners from across the world all vying for an opportunity. So even when Macpherson’s time at the Saskatchewan Marathon last May was two minutes under, she knew she had to had to better. At the Queen City marathon in Regina, she was able to secure a time of three hours and 48 mins. Macpherson said running has become a big part of her daily routine.

“On January 1, 2014, I decided I was going to try and run every day for a year, and I’ve actually run every day for the last four years,” she said.

Macpherson admits the cold weather has impacted her training, but is very thankful for the running track at the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse. (Facebook/ Vicki Macpherson)

In addition to the Sask. Marathon in Saskatoon and the Queen City marathon in Regina, Macpherson has also been a regular competitor in Prince Albert’s Summit Run and the Frank Dunn Triathlon at Waskesiu. Macpherson, who used to smoke, said she enjoys the feeling of running.

“You know they talk about the Endorphins and all that kind of thing, and I thought I could be a bit better if I quit smoking so i quit smoking and my running just improved and improved,” she said.

The Boston Marathon has been scheduled to take place April 15 on Patriot’s Day.
