Celebrating Women

Female musicians to be honoured in P.A. this International Women’s Day

Mar 6, 2019 | 5:02 PM

Prince Albert residents will be treated to an evening dedicated to the celebration of women, and women in the music industry on Friday.

An International Women’s Day Concert and roundtable will take place at Jam Street Music Sessions March 8, from 6:30 to 10 p.m., and will feature a variety of female artists from those just emerging, to some of the biggest names in Saskatchewan country music.

SaskMusic will play host to the International Women’s Day sponsored event, while also hosting three other concerts throughout the province taking place in Swift Current, Regina and Saskatoon.

Lorena Kelly, communications and operations manager with SaskMusic, said the events will highlight females in the music industry, while donating proceeds to female-related charities.

“We were approached by a national funding agency called Factor Canada,” she said. “They were interested in doing a series of events right across Canada,” said Kelly.

“We ended up deciding we wanted to do four events to cover the province as best we could. It also ties in really nicely with the fact that we’ve recently launched an initiative called Women in Music Saskatchewan.”

The Prince Albert event will feature a women in music round table discussion taking place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by performances from four female artists.

“The reason we’re doing that (round table) is we want to try and connect as many female artists, musicians, songwriters with each other to start building connections and a support structure and to have an opportunity to talk about the challenges that are unique to being a woman in this business,” Kelly said. “That will be followed by a concert. We’ve selected two youth emerging artists, and two more established artists for our bill there.”

One of the performers who will be both performing and emceeing the event is Lisa Moen, who received the 2018 Sask. Country Music Association’s Country Music Person of the Year, and Planet S Magazine’s Best Solo Act awards.

“It’s a huge deal for me. Music is very important to me and I’m very proud to be a female in this business,” Moen said. “I think it’s recognition, because we are still the minority, which just blows me away because there are so many females in all music genres. I think women are really booming and we’re proud, we’re proud to be working moms. We just make it happen and I think there’s a lot to be said about that. I’m very honoured to be amongst so many strong female vocalists.”

Moen noted that she will debut an acoustic version of a new song to be released next Monday.

Also featured in the event will be Mercy Glover, Atlanta Jane, and Liza Jayne Brown.

Tickets to the event are $10 per person, children are also welcome to attend. All admission proceeds from the Prince Albert event will be donated to the Prince Albert Safe Shelter for Women.
