Food waste the focus of Agriculture Literacy Month

Mar 4, 2019 | 1:00 PM

The Government of Saskatchewan is hoping that more kids learn where their food originates.

March has been proclaimed as Agriculture Literacy month in the Province, with the theme focusing on food waste.

Agriculture Literacy Month brings agriculture to life in classrooms around the province as farmers, ranchers and members of the agriculture industry help students to learn about, connect to and understand the industry.

In a media release Agriculture Minister David Marit explained that it’s relevant to teach children about modern food production.

““It should be important for everyone to understand how their food is produced,” Marit said. “The continued success of the agriculture industry relies heavily on their (students) support and understanding.”

Sara Shymko, the agriculture in the classroom director, also stated in the release that this March they’ve encouraged farmers, ranchers and anyone connected to the ag-industry to share their stories.

“This year, we are asking volunteers to give a personal example of how they are helping to reduce the problem of food waste,” Shymko said.
