A look at coroner’s recommendations following Humboldt Broncos bus crash

REGINA — The coroner in Saskatchewan has completed its investigation into the Humboldt Broncos crash that killed 16 people and injured 13 on the junior hockey team’s bus last April.

It has made six recommendations:

— The Ministry of Highways should review its policy regarding installation of traffic control devices and signs at and in advance of the rural intersection near Tisdale, Sask., where the crash happened.  

— The Saskatchewan Highway Patrol should review its policy and procedures to ensure stricter compliance with regulations and standards for commercial vehicle drivers.

— The Saskatchewan Coroners Service should create a plan for mass casualties that includes a review of how bodies are identified.

— Saskatchewan Government Insurance should work with the trucking industry to implement standardized and possibly mandatory training for truck drivers.

— The Saskatchewan Health Authority should review its policy about identifying patients in the event of mass casualties.

— Transport Canada should continue developing regulations to improve national safety codes with respect to driver training and electronic logging devices. It should also create regulations mandating the installation of seatbelts in highway public transport buses.
