Canada’s Mirela Rahneva earns World Cup skeleton silver in Calgary

CALGARY — Germany’s Tina Hermann won the World Cup season finale in women’s skeleton with Canada’s Mirela Rahneva taking silver on her home track Saturday.

Rahneva, from Ottawa, had won gold the previous day in Calgary in a makeup race for one cancelled in Germany earlier in the season.

Laura Deas of Britain took bronze Saturday on the sliding track at WinSport’s Canada’s Olympic Park.

Men’s and women’s bobsled were scheduled for later Saturday. Sunday’s men’s skeleton and four-man bobsled conclude the World Cup season.

Hermann was fourth in the first of two runs Saturday, but her time of 58.42 seconds on her second pass vaulted her into the gold-medal position.

Calgary’s Elisabeth Maier led after the opening run, but dropped to fourth after earning a bronze medal Friday.

Russia’s Elena Nikitina won the season’s overall World Cup title ahead of Hermann in second and Rahneva in third.
