Sliding into Family Day

A number of people spent Family Day slipping and sliding away at Little Red River Park Monday.

The free sliding event was hosted by the Community Alcohol Strategy Steering Committee (CASSC), in conjunction with the Prince Albert Winter Festival and other local groups. Karen Anthony-Burns, coordinator with the CASSC told paNOW they are happy to be part of the family sliding day.

“We like to encourage fun family activities that don’t include alcohol,” she said.

Anthony-Burns and her group were also handing out free crazy carpets to anyone who wanted them. The carpets were sponsored by Canadian Tire and the Northern Lights Community Development Corporation.

Save-On Foods also participated in the event Monday, handing out free hot dogs and hot chocolate.

Along with the chance to slide down the hill, some people took the opportunity to go on a horse-drawn sleigh ride. Early in the afternoon, both the hill and sleigh ride were popular attractions.

The free sliding day has been a part of the winter festival for the past few years. Bev Erickson, festival treasurer said that since its addition, the event has gone well.

“I think it’s very successful, it’s great to get people off the couch,” she said.

This is the third year the community alcohol strategy organization has helped organize the sliding day. In previous years, there were some issues to overcome.

“The first year we came out it was quite a challenge because we were actually shovelling snow onto the hill, there wasn’t enough snow,” said Anthony-Burns.

This year, the alcohol strategy had 350 crazy carpets to giveaway to those who came out. Last year despite to cold temperatures a nice crowd came out and Anthony-Burns and her group gave away all of the carpets they brought.

“Last year we gave out 250,” she said.
