Daring ice escape at Murray Point cancelled

Feb 15, 2019 | 3:29 PM

There’s disappointing news for people who were set to watch Roger Boucher’s daring escape from chains under the ice at Emma Lake Saturday afternoon.

Lakeland Fire Chief Chris McShannock told paNOW the weight of the surrounding snow means water is gushing up through and over the hole prepared for Boucher’s jump.

“The biggest concern is where the hole is and the requirements needed to have Roger to do his event, we had to have so much water below the ice because of the divers,” he said. “We don’t think it’s safe for the public [watching] to have that amount of water pushing up.”

McShannock said their polar dive fundraiser was also cancelled. He couldn’t yet say if and when Boucher’s escape would be re-scheduled.

However, the annual fishing derby, which is also a fundraiser for a new fire hall, will go ahead as the holes cut into the ice for that are much smaller.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the event runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
