P.A. employers named best in the province

Mediacorp Canada announced its annual list of Saskatchewan’s top employers, and two of the employers mentioned have ties to Prince Albert and the northern region.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic was recognized for the third consecutive year, and the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) made the shortlist twice. Sask. Polytechnic President and CEO Dr. Larry Rosia said it’s an honour to be mentioned.

“It’s really a tribute to the work of our faculty and staff, and I’d like to thank our faculty and staff for making Sask. Polytech such a great place to work,” he said.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic has campuses in Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Regina and Moose Jaw. Rosia said his organization has a number or initiatives in place to help retain the best people. One of those initiatives, which was introduced seven years ago, is an employee engagement survey.

“We do that annually as a way to continually strive and get feedback to ensure that we are building a desirable work environment,” he said, adding they feel there is a strong relationship between faculty who feel engaged, and student success.

That being said, Rosia added there is always room for growth and said members of his organization are constantly looking for ways to recruit members who come from underrepresented groups in society. Two programs created to address this need are Indigenous awareness training and a diversity and inclusion leadership committee.

Now in its 14^th year, Saskatchewan’s Top Employers recognizes employers that offer the most progressive and forward thinking programs. The criteria used by the editors include work atmosphere, family benefits, vacation time, employee communication, and community involvement. Shauna Bear, Vice President of Human Resources with SIGA, began her career in Prince Albert at Northern Lights Casino.

“Every day at SIGA we aim to instill a sense of pride, place and belonging in our employees, and this is proof that we are doing just that,” she said.

SIGA employs more than 1,900 people in Saskatchewan, with 64 per cent identifying as First Nations people; 56 per cent of the work force are women; and 46 per cent of the management team consist of women.

“Those are some stats we are very proud of and we believe we are a leader in employing First Nations people right across the nation,” she said.
