The Saskatchewan Roughriders are shoring up the run game, signing the league’s second-best rusher in 2018.

The club announced it has locked up former Ottawa Redblacks running back William Powell, signing him to a two-year deal that keeps him with the team through 2020.

Powell has been a top running back in the league the last two seasons, most recently rushing for 1,362 yards and six touchdowns for an average of 5.4 yards per carry.

The 30-year-old from Duncanville, Texas also added 319 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Powell is a two-time east division all-star. He won a Grey Cup with Ottawa in 2016.

Riders linebacker Cameron Judge seems to be on board with the signing, tweeting “Life got a bit easier come June.”

Powell had a heck of a set of games against the Roughriders in 2018.

In June he had a total of 118 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns. In September he had 148 yards rushing and two touchdowns, plus seven yards receiving.
