Culture to play big role in PAGC winter festival

Feb 11, 2019 | 3:14 PM

There will be no shortage of things to see and do this week, as the first annual Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) winter festival gets underway.

Some events will coincide with the city’s winter festival, and other events will stand alone according to Korey Diehl, with the PAGC’s sports, culture and recreation department, who explained their event will have a greater emphasis on indigenous culture.

“We just thought that if [the Prince Albert winter festival] is doing some events that are not always targeted towards our First Nations that we have some events that they come and do, and you know everyone is welcome to come and be at both,” he said.

The PAGC winter festival is scheduled to run from Feb. 16 to 22, and events will include a youth hockey tournament, an Elders supper, as well as a poker rally and king and queen trapper competitions. Diehl said there are many fun events.

“I am looking forward to the youth talent show, you know there’s going to be a lot of young kids coming to showcase their talents,” he said.

Diehl said the chiefs and directors from the PAGC member communities have all been very supportive and as a result there is no shortage of volunteers. Saskatchewan Penitentiary has also offered to send some minimum security inmates to assist with clean up and take down.
