City looking for local group to run community garden space

Feb 11, 2019 | 11:58 AM

The City of Prince Albert has put out a call for proposals in the hopes a local group will be interested in taking over the city’s community garden space.

City administrators are asking for expressions of interest from local groups that may be interested in managing the garden plots, located on 15th Avenue East next to École Holy Cross, this spring. City staff members worked with the local food coalition to manage the plots for the last few years, but Parks Manager Tim Yeaman said they hope a community organization is willing to step up to handle day-to-day operations.

“Having the opportunity to provide it with a little more care and attention, and I think there’s tons of possibilities down there as well,” Yeaman said. “There is a lot more work to do down there than simply just getting prepared for the season, and being able to manage it, and help the individuals that are renting the plots down there as well.”

While users are responsible for caring for their individual plots, Yeaman said there is some administrative work involved to coordinate rentals each spring and communicate with local gardeners.

“There’s a number of things that come up on a regular basis throughout the year where the city is not always able to be on site and attend with,” he added. “I think if we had somebody there that could have a hands-on approach, it would be a benefit to the city but also a benefit to the community as well.”

The city is accepting proposals until Feb. 28. Information packages can be picked up at city hall and site visits are available as well.

If no community organizations express an interest in taking over, Yeaman said the city will continue to manage the garden plots through the 2019 growing season.

“This would be a time for community to get together and actually get to know one another as well, so that’s the upside of this project,” Yeaman said. “What a great way to get to know your neighbours.”
