P.A. and area community foundation celebrates 20 years

The Prince Albert and Area Community Foundation (PAACF) is celebrating its twentieth year and members are looking toward the future with the upcoming dispersal of grants to support projects in P.A.

“It was initially established in February of 1999, and has been operating since then,” Executive Director of the PAACF Marilyn Peterson said. “The nature of a community foundation is that it’s very slow growing because most of the money that is given out is only the money from interest on investments.”

Peterson added an event is planned for June to recognize former and current members of the foundation, as well as past grant recipients.

“We’ll be inviting former and current grant recipients, former and current board members, other people in the community that have supported us, and all of our donors from over the years,” Peterson said. “We’ll be having a little bit to eat, listening to a couple of good people and doing a lot of visiting and catching up with each other.”

Peterson added there are plans to look into the option of establishing an anniversary fund, with the hopes of going back to the original donors.

“Our original donors came about because of the year 2000, so it was called the Millennium Fund,” Peterson said.

“That’s where not all, but the majority of all of our original donations came from. The twentieth year would be a good year to take a look at that again, and let our original donors, and our new ones, know what they are doing and engage them once more.”

Peterson also noted the foundation will look into new initiatives to recruit donors, looking for smaller donations that add up over time.

Grant applications are now available for the 2019 year for those in the community with a project seeking funding.

“Our grants are from two sources. One is from the Moffat Family Foundation, and the other is the United Way of Saskatoon Prince Albert branch. We’re really lucky this year because we’ve had an increase in funding from the Moffat Family Foundation,” Peterson said.

“All together we will have close to $100,000 to give away, so we’re really excited about that. It’s an increase of about $30,000 from last year.”

According to Peterson, applicants must have a charitable registration number, and funds are allocated only to groups or projects, never individuals.

“It’s for organizations or groups doing work in the community to assist people, such as youth, seniors, or those who are disadvantaged in any way, to help build the community,” Peterson said.

“It goes through a committee of our board of directors, and we go through each application in detail to determine how much we can give, and for what purpose.”
