Mintos sweep Argos in last home games for a while

Feb 3, 2019 | 4:43 PM

Sunday was the Prince Albert Mintos’ last home game until Feb. 24, so they made it count.

They piled on eight goals to beat the Notre Dame Argos 8-1. They also beat the Argos 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday. The Mintos have now won their last five games and are tied for fifth place in the league with the Notre Dame Hounds with 44 points.

As goaltender Carter Woodside was called up to the WHL’s Regina Pats to fill in for the injured Dean McNabb this weekend, Spencer Welke was counted on to safeguard the Mintos’ goal. He picked up both wins, making 21 saves on 24 shots on Saturday and 14 of 15 shots in Sunday’s 8-1 win. Welke gave away to call up Joel Favreau after 40 minutes of play, as his Mintos had a 6-1 lead. Favreau made seven stops in relief.

Gabe Klassen had another pair of goals and added an assist, giving him seven during his four-game, goal-scoring streak. Klassen still leads the Sask Midget AAA Hockey League with 28 goals.

Dawson Springer had two goals and an assist. Gavin Ingram had a goal and two helpers. Blake Duquette, Alex Von Sprecken and Chase Friedt-Mohr all added goals.

The Mintos only have one home game remaining in the regular season, their last one Feb. 24 against the Saskatoon Contacts.

Until then, the Mintos will play five games on the road: Feb. 5 against the Battlefords Stars, Feb. 9 against the Notre Dame Hounds, Feb. 10 against the Swift Current Legionnaires, Feb. 16 against the Yorkton Maulers and Feb. 17 against the Regina Pat Canadians.
