Arts board looks to help artists grow

Feb 2, 2019 | 10:00 AM

The Prince Albert Arts Board wants to help local artists take the next step in their careers.

The second annual Parts for the Arts professional development day will be running Saturday afternoon at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre.

Cara Stelmaschuk, who is in charge of publicity for the P.A. arts board said the event will focus on providing those in attendance with a wide range of information.

“It’s an event kind of developed to give artists the tools to step into the next phase of developing their craft either as a business or just expanding their abilities,” she said.

One of the sessions aims to help people get the financial resources they need so they can focus on their work.

“So our first session of the day will be a presentation that’s going to be all about grant writing and opportunities for grants from creative Saskatchewan, so we’re going to have one of their representatives here to talk about some of their opportunities,” she said.

In order to provide those in attendance a diverse prospective, organizers are bringing in artists from a wide range of disciplines.

“We’re bringing in local artists, some maybe that are from a little outside of town, but still very much centred around Prince Albert and we’re trying to represent as many different kinds arts as we can, so we have visual artists, we have a writer, we have musicians,” she said.

This year’s workshop will be different from last years as it will be more of a panel format, which will allow for more audience participation.

The event will wrap up with a talk by First Nations and Métis author Aaron Paquette, who will be speaking at 7 p.m. Stelmaschuk said Paquette will be talking about an interesting topic.

“He’s going to be speaking the role of art and mental health,” she said.

Stelmaschuk said the role art can play in the healing process is one which people need to be reminded about.

“We’re pretty excited to have him come too,” she said.

The workshop will be getting underway at noon. There is no charge to attend the event.
