Plans continue to simmer for local multi-use facility
A small community southeast of Prince Albert has found a creative way to stir up financial support for a major project.
On Thursday, the Birch Hills Library Board will be hosting a stone soup luncheon at the town’s civic centre, with proceeds going to the new multi-use facility. Town Councilor Barry Evans said just like in the fable, when a community came together to make a healthy soup, a lot of support and different ingredients will also be needed to make the facility a reality. He said he hoped lots of people would come out for the meal.
“Everyone comes with their donation for the multi-use and we can raise some more money for it,” he said.
Evans said as of Monday, the fundraising committee was over half way towards meeting their $500,000 goal, and construction was progressing on schedule.
“Construction wise we are getting ready to cement the floor back where we have done our underslab plumbing and once we get that done we are going to start framing walls,” he said.
The old Coop store in Birch Hills is being coverted for the facility, which will house a senior’s home, a public library, and the local Lions club. There has been no set opening date.
The stone luncheon will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday. Evans hinted another fundraiser was being planned for early in the new year, but he would not give any further details at this time.
