U Sports Roundup: Gryphons top Warriors in double overtime 47-44

GUELPH, Ont. — Gabe Ferraro connected on a 42-yard field goal in double overtime to lift the Guelph Gryphons over the Waterloo Warriors 47-44 on Saturday afternoon in Canadian university football.

Jean-Paul Cimankinda rushed for 157 yards, including a six-yard touchdown run in the first overtime, as (5-3) Guelph won its third straight game. QB Theo Landers completed 11-of-22 passes for 184 yards, two TD strikes and an interception.

Ferraro finished the game with four field goals, including one with no time left on the clock in the fourth quarter to force the extra periods, and four conversions.

Quarterback Tre Ford connected on 30-of-38 attempts for Waterloo (4-4), with five passing touchdowns for 396 yards. Tyler Ternowski caught two TDs from Ford.

SACKVILLE, N.B. — Hunter Guenard completed 23-of-40 passes for 363 yards and three touchdowns to power Acadia (4-3) past Mount Allison. Wide receiver Josh Hicks caught four passes for 100 yards and a TD for the Mounties (2-5).

TORONTO — QB Brett Hunchak threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns in York’s (3-5) win over Toronto. Ethan Shafer connected on two field goals and a conversion for the Varsity Blues (0-8).

WINDSOR, Ont. — Jordan Lyons rushed for 184 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown as McMaster (5-3) topped the Lancers. Clark Green had a 34-yard field goal and Windsor (1-7) added a safety for the home team’s points.

KINGSTON, Ont. — Sawyer Buettne’s two-yard TD run in the fourth quarter was enough for Ottawa (6-2) to hold on for a narrow victory over Queen’s. Chris Osei-Kusi caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Nate Hobbs with 2:49 left to play but that was as close as the Gaels (3-5) would get.

LONDON, Ont. — Quarterback Chris Merchant dominated play, passing for 251 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 97 yards and another two TDS to power Western (8-0) past Laurier. His counterpart Connor Carusello had 217 passing yards, a TD and two interceptions for the Golden Hawks (4-4).

LENNOXVILLE, Que. — Keiran Burnham kicked a 31-yard field goal with seven seconds left on the clock as St. F-X (5-2) edged Bishop’s. Mathieu Demers threw for 171 yards and a touchdown to lead the Gaiters (0-8).

MONTREAL — Benjamin Carre returned an Adam Vance interception for 100 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal McGill’s (2-5) victory over Concordia (2-5).

SASKATOON — Kyle Siemens threw for 262 yards and a touchdown as Saskatchewan (4-3) scored 25 consecutive points to defeat Manitoba (3-4) and clinch a berth in the Canada West playoffs.

VANCOUVER — Michael O’Connor threw for 419 yards and two touchdowns, while Trivel Pinto had a TD and 198 yards receiving as UBC (4-3) clinched a post-season berth for a fourth straight year with a win over Alberta (2-5).
