Mintos erase 3-goal deficit and steal a win vs. Legionnaires

Oct 21, 2018 | 4:00 PM

The Prince Albert Mintos (6-3) erased a 3-0 lead and took the two points in a 4-3 win, in regulation no less, over the Swift Current Legionnaires (7-3) in thrilling Midget AAA action Sunday at the Art Hauser Centre.

The Legionnaires carried most of the play early on and got goals from Reed Jacobson and Riley Dekowny in the first period, and Hendrik DeKlerk early in the second period.

But the Mintos turned it around with their special teams.

Gabe Klassen got the Mintos on the board with a power play marker midway through the second and Turner McMillen scored a shorthanded goal late in the frame to make it a one-goal game heading into the third period.

Then shortly after their power play expired with five minutes remaining, defenceman Chase Friedt-Mohr scored his first Midget AAA career goal to tie the game.

The Legionnaires got into some serious penalty trouble just 30 seconds later, giving the Mintos a full two-minute, 5-on-3 power play after taking a tripping penalty and a bench minor arguing the call. Dawson Springer made them pay by scoring on the power play, gliding to the high slot and scoring a shot wrist shot on the glove side.

As the Legionnaires fought late to tie on the power play, Mintos goaltender Carter Woodside dove across his own goal line to somehow take away a sure goal from Legionnaire Boston Bird. That was his finest of the 23 saves he made Sunday. It was also a meaningful game coming in for Woodside, who played his 15-year-old season with the Legionnaires two seasons ago.

The Mintos will host the Beardy’s Blackhawks on Wednesday for their next game, 7 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre.
