RCMP lay out laws for ATV use on public land

Oct 20, 2018 | 10:00 AM

Cumberland House RCMP are advising the public about the do’s and don’ts of riding an ATV on public land.

In a media release they reminded operators they must be 16 years of age and hold a valid driver’s licence.

There is an exception according to the RCMP statement.

Youth between the ages of 12 and 15 can operate an ATV on public land and may cross roads (but cannot drive on roads) if they have passed an approved ATV training course, or if they’re supervised by someone who has held a driver’s licence continuously for the last 365 days. The supervising rider can be riding a different ATV or be on the same ATV as the youth.

The statement added riders are legally required to wear an approved helmet while operating in public areas, and impairment by drugs and/or is illegal whether on public or private land, and is treated the same as if operating a motor vehicle on a street, road or highway.

RCMP are advising ATV riders to review Saskatchewan’s All Terrain Vehicles Act prior to operating an ATV on public land, “as there are fines that could be issued if caught violating sections of the act on public land or roads.“
