Saying thanks to the school bus drivers

Oct 15, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Getting your kids back home safe at the end of the day is in part thanks to hundreds of drivers across the province.

It was Bus Driver Appreciation Day across Saskatchewan Monday.

Cheryl Delgadillo has been behind the wheel for the last 10 years with the Sask. Rivers School Division and said the job entails a lot more than driving.

“We have to be student managers, and that means sometimes being a mom or being a teacher or a helper,” she said. “I think we mean a lot more to the kids than just being a driver.”

Delgadillo added the drivers are often the first face of the school division students see in the morning so “It’s nice to get the kids started with a hello or a smile and help start their day off right too.”

Delgadillo gets a kick out of parents who’ll accompany her on school trips and then tell her as they get off the bus that they’re having flashbacks to their own childhood.

“I tell them I hope they were good flashbacks,” she said with a laugh.
