Health Authority charting the course on future of Vic Hospital

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) and Ministry of Health are reviewing submissions in their Request for Proposals on how to move forward on the development of the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert.

The submission deadline was Oct. 9, 2018. Executive Director of Infrastructure Management for SHA, Derek Miller, said information on how many proposals and who submitted them won’t be released until all the tenders have been reviewed.

 “We’re just going through the evaluation process,” Miller said. “By November we could be in a position to have a contractor on board.”

In his campaign for premiership last October, Scott Moe committed the next major healthcare capital investment to be the redevelopment of the Prince Albert hospital when finances permit. It would be funded completely by the province.

“To date, $3.1 million has been provided to support the development of the Victoria Hospital. The Request for Proposal will assist the SHA and Ministry of Health in developing options for how to move forward. This may include redeveloping and expanding the existing site or building a new hospital,” Minister of Health Jim Reiter said in an email to paNOW.

Over the last few years, Miller said a lot of work has been completed in looking at what services the hospital will provide and some concepts that would influence the design. The successful tender will look at data in terms of patient volumes, current services, trends and forecasts for the future, among other things to help the health authority finalize a plan for the redevelopment.

“The RFP is really about getting a consultant to help lead us through the process that will really assess what the future services would be in the hospital… and doing all the work to get that together in a business case that can be presented for consideration of the project by government,” Miller said.

The objective is to submit the business case as part of the budget cycle in the spring of 2019.
