Mystery mansion sells to B.C.-based buyer

The subject of much mystery and intrigue, a half-built mansion near the town of Weldon now has a new owner following an online auction Thursday.

The unfinished, 12,000-square-foot home and surrounding agricultural land sold Thursday for $550,000 in an online auction conducted by Ritchie Bros. Luke Fritshaw, regional sales manager with Ritchie Bros. said the auction generated lots of interest from people around the world, and much discussion about how the colossal property came to be.

The home, located just off Highway 3 near Weldon, was built in 2009 but never finished. The new buyer is located in British Columbia.

“It was big day, everybody was kind of ramped up, ready to see the mansion sell and everybody was pretty excited to watch it go,” Fritshaw told paNOW. “I’ve never seen anything like it. We’ve sold a lot of different, unique properties and pieces of equipment [but] nothing like this property.”

Prospective bidders turned up at the Ritchie Bros. viewing theatre in Saskatoon Thursday, and also signed up online to see the auction in real time. The online property listing generated thousands of views.

Bidders from Saskatchewan were also vying for the property, Fritshaw said, but once the price hit $550,000, the competition stopped. The property had previously been valued at $2.6 million fair market value. Fritshaw couldn’t provide details about the new owner or their plans for the property.

“It’s something that we’ll likely never see again here for another lifetime,” he added. “It was very unique.”
