Wahpeton Dakota Nation set to celebrate culture camp

Aug 27, 2018 | 12:00 PM

The Wahepton Dakota Nation will be celebrating their culture for another year.

The culture camp is set to return to the Nation’s cultural grounds and features a variety of activities around language, gender roles and traditional games along with live entertainment. This year’s theme is “Focusing on the Youth of Wahpeton,” according to a poster circulating on social media.

Aug. 28 marks the first day of the camp. Opening ceremonies are preceded by an 8 a.m. pipe ceremony. Breakfast will be followed by gender role teachings and a mini powwow. Teachings about Buffalo Ball, a traditional game, will take place in the afternoon before Emery Burningrass hosts a show at 6 p.m.

The day will be concluded with a full moon ceremony for women and a sweat lodge ceremony for men.

Activities on Aug. 29 appear to shift to focusing on the lands; a medicine walk starts the day, which is followed by games and hunting and art teachings. Participants will also have a chance to learn about smoking meat.

The evening’s fun comes in the form of two neckbone eating contests for those under and over the age of 15.

The final day of the camp, Aug. 30, features a variety of teachings revolving around clothing. Moccasin, skirt and shirt teachings are all featured, alongside education about the drum. The camp is concluded with a feast-style luncheon in the early afternoon.
