Saskatoon police make arrest in stolen RCMP sidearm case, gun still missing

Aug 15, 2018 | 3:33 PM

Saskatoon police say they’ve made an arrest in their investigation into a stolen RCMP firearm.

Police said the theft occurred overnight Aug. 8 while the firearm was stored in a vehicle parked at a Saskatoon hotel. Saskatoon police immediately began an investigation, and released surveillance images of a suspect.

The Saskatoon Police Service released a statement Wednesday saying a suspect had been arrested, but the wayward firearm had not yet been located. According to police, members of the Saskatoon Police Service Bike Unit spotted a man matching the suspect’s description on Third Ave. S. in Saskatoon Aug. 13. He was found to be in possession of a controlled substance, police noted, but not the firearm.

After the arrest, two warrant searches were executed Aug. 14, police said, though the missing handgun was not inside either home.

The 60-year-old suspect is charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of a controlled substance, police said. He was released from custody on conditions and will appear in court Sept. 4.

The missing firearm is a silver 9mm Smith & Wesson 5946, bearing the serial number BDX1238 and an RCMP engraving. Police advised the public not to handle the firearm if it is found, and to call 911 immediately.

One RCMP officer was placed on temporary administrative duty following the theft.
