TRADE COMMITTEE TO TALK TARIFFS

The House of Commons trade committee will return to work today for a special meeting to discuss the economic pain of the Trump administration’s steel and aluminum tariffs. The committee will hear nearly four hours of testimony from witnesses representing metals and auto companies and their unionized workers. The meeting will bring a number of MPs back to Parliament Hill, uprooting them from their ridings one week after they began the summer recess.

RCMP NEED TO IMPROVE INDIGENOUS RELATIONS: COMMISSIONER

The head of the RCMP has apologized to the families of missing and murdered Indigenous women while pledging improved relations with Aboriginal communities. Commissioner Brenda Lucki testified in Regina at the national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women. Lucki said the RCMP “could have done better and I promise to you we will do better.” The inquiry has heard several instances of police not taking the cases of missing Indigenous women seriously.

CANADA SPENDS MILLIONS ON BORDER CROSSERS

As the United States faces mounting criticism over its treatment and detention of illegal migrants, new statistics released by the federal government show Canada’s treatment of irregular border crossers stands in stark contrast. The figures show Canada spent over $5 million in 2017 and the first part of 2018 on temporary housing, food and water to migrants who crossed into Canada through the unofficial crossing in St. Bernard-de-Lacolle, Que.

SENTENCING FOR TWO MEN IN B.C. POLYGAMY CASE

Two men convicted last year of practising polygamy are scheduled to be sentenced today in a B.C. court. A special prosecutor has recommended three to six months in jail for Winston Blackmore and one to three months for James Oler. Peter Wilson told the B.C. Supreme Court last month that both men were motivated by sincerely held religious beliefs and are, by all accounts, law-abiding, hard-working and honest.

REPORT: DISTRESS OFTEN A PART OF DEMENTIA CAREGIVING

More than 402,000 Canadians aged 65-plus are estimated to have some form of dementia, with about 270,000 being cared for at home in 2015-16, the period covered by a report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information. It found that 45 per cent of family caregivers experienced distress related to their role, compared with 26 per cent of those providing care for seniors without dementia. The institute’s Tracy Johnson says distress comes results from burnout in addition to managing medications and challenging behaviour.

CANADA’S LARGEST PARK, UNESCO SITE THREATENED

Alberta is defending its management of a world heritage site this week at meetings of UNESCO which has described Wood Buffalo National Park as endangered. The United Nations agency has said Canada’s largest national park is threatened by hydro development and the expansion of the oilsands in northern Alberta. The province’s response to 17 UNESCO recommendations released earlier this month is to be discussed this week at the meetings in Bahrain.
