New lab to bolster outdoor research at Hannin Creek

Jun 27, 2018 | 2:00 PM

A new research lab has opened at the educational facility at Hannin Creek on Candle Lake.

The new lab was added to the existing Education and Applied Research Centre, which has already benefitted students and researchers for over 50 years. It’s expected to further research into natural resources, engineering, and human services, according to officials from Saskatchewan Polytechnic and the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, who are partners on the project.

“It’s an opportunity to take what may be learned in a book from a theoretical perspective and apply that to a hands-on, real-world environment,” Jamie Hilts, a dean with Saskatchewan Polytech, told paNOW. “Be it within the four different seasons, and within the plant or animal kingdom, it allows people to work in an environment which is in nature itself.”

The new laboratory classroom and research complex features a wet lab, allowing students to dissect and study animals and flora.

The centre is the only boreal forest field station in Saskatchewan, and Sask Polytech students and instructors are able to base themselves at the camp facility while working on their studies. The unique location allows for the study of programs associated with forestry, fisheries, wildlife, and conservation law, as well as environmental, civil, and water resource engineering technology.

“The goal is to be training future conservationists up there,” Wildlife Federation Spokesperson Chelsea Walters told paNOW. “Anyone, from environmental science workers to conservation officers, can study there, and there are many things they’ll need a lab for.”

The new facility cost $450,000, with about half the funding coming from a federal government grant and the rest shared between the two partners.
