Hamilton’s Matthew Gaudet instrumental in Yale’s NCAA men’s lacrosse title
Canadian Matthew Gaudet looked around Gilette Stadium, at the nearly 30,000 fans watching the NCAA men’s lacrosse championship, and was filled with a sense of gratitude.
Gaudet scored four times and was named game MVP as he led Yale to a 13-11 victory over the Duke Blue Devils on May 28 for the Bulldogs’ first-ever men’s lacrosse title The win was also a moment of personal triumph for Gaudet, who had been in his coaches’ dog house early in the season, nailed to the bench for long stretches and typically only getting used in extra-man situations.
“During the final I was just really gracious to my coaches,” said Gaudet. “It was honestly unreal. Everyone was talking about ‘it’s going to be us this year, it’s going to be us,’ but when we were actually in that game and winning it was like ‘we can do this, we are doing this right now.’ It was so surreal. It’s really still so hard to take in.”
Gaudet grew up playing box lacrosse for the Hamilton Bengals in the Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League, while attending Salisbury School where he played attack for the Connecticut high school’s field lacrosse team. He had an immediate impact for Yale, scoring 32 times and adding five assists in 2017, his freshman year.
