Rural house fire started in shed: Fire Chief

May 31, 2018 | 2:00 PM

Investigators have established the starting point of the fire that destroyed a house in the RM of Buckland Saturday.

Up to 16 firefighters from six units were called to the blaze on C.L. Marshall Road.

“We’ve determined where it started but not what started it,” Fire Chief Garry Schrader told paNOW. “It started behind the house in a shed.”

He said the cause is ‘undetermined’ and could not say if any suspicious element may have been involved.

The incident was serious and a neighbouring property to the rear required protection as fire fighters tackled the blaze.

Shrader reminded homeowners to ensure their properties were free of excessive clutter, woody debris or shrubbery.

“Clean up around your yards everywhere because there was a lot of stuff there,” he said. ”People need to be ‘fire smart’ around their buildings.”

The loss of the home, was an additionally traumatic experience for owners Peggy and Dennis Diehl, who are the grandparents of Jake Diehl, the talented musician who’s in critical condition in a Saskatoon hospital. They were visiting Jake when the house burned down.
