Doing It Wright for 40 Years

May 21, 2018 | 12:00 AM

Celebrating 40 years of business in 2018, Wright’s Greenhouse continues to be a critical part of gardening in the north east.

With a deep connection to community, Wright’s Greenhouse continues to evolve, meeting the changing gardening needs of their clients, incorporating three generations of knowledge, through changes in the industry, during the good times and the bad in the farming area they call home,

“When we began this business, Angie was just a baby and she was here with us while we worked,” recalls Wendy Wright who commented that Wright’s Greenhouse was started when she and her husband, Tom, moved back home to Beatty after a downturn in the Alberta economy in the 1970s.

Since then, the family slowly grew the business, with help from Tom’s parents. The baby rocking in a bassinet in the greenhouse became a toddler and then a young woman passionate about the business. At the same time, trips to Wright’s Greenhouse became a tradition with most families in the area and the bright red delivery truck with the Wright’s Greenhouse sign on the side was driven by Grandfather, Cam Wright, happily making deliveries well into his very senior years. Though Cam is now gone – the bright red truck with the sign still is used by the greenhouse.

Because Angie (Wright) Bragg, who now manages Beatty and Melfort, literally grew up in the greenhouses, she was the natural one to take the next step and go on to take her Horticultural degree through Olds College.

With her lifetime of greenhouse experience, her training and continual updates in gardening trends, Bragg and her family provide multiple greenhouses filled with every plant imaginable for gardeners of all preferences.

Herbs

As always, gardeners can depend on Bragg to advise them on the plants best suited to particular projects in particular locations and conditions. With information on soil conditions, indoor or outdoor planting, amount of sunlight and so on, Bragg can help every level of gardener – from those with large gardens to those who plant in containers, not only find the right plants, but provide valuable information on care and maintenance of each variety.

“Pinks and purples are always favorite,” Angie reflects. “But we are noticing that there are many more young people coming in, interested in vegetables for potted gardening, so we have a really good selection for that including a good variety of herbs.”

Bragg also notes that succulents are an increasingly popular trend and classes will be continuing in both locations through the season.

Gardening accessories and merchandise are also an important trend and Wright’s has accommodated this with a large selection of gift ware, garden accessories and fashion in the Melfort location with a new shipment in just in time for the season opening.

With an incredible selection, an eye on gardening trends and generations of experience and knowledge, Wright’s Greenhouse is the obvious choice for any gardener this spring.

Two locations: Beatty and Melfort will be open 7 days a week from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
