Local riders to represent Team Canada

Two young women from MacDowall have been asked to help represent Team Canada at the upcoming America Junior Paint Horse Association  – Youth World Games.

Mikayla Sinclair and Demi McGunigal, both 18, will travel to Fort Worth, Texas in June. Sinclair said she’s very excited about the trip.

“Probably just the experience and being able to go down there and do this, it’s pretty huge,” she said.

Both women have been riding for as long as they can remember, and were chosen based on their experience. At the games, they will be part of a team of five. Each team member is responsible for a different event at the games, and the team is judged based on its total points. Sinclair will compete in the equitation event and McGunigal in showmanship. McGunigal said she feels about nervous about representing the country.

“There is a little bit of pressure for sure but it’s exciting,” she said.

Sinclair and McGunigal have been training two to three days a week to prepare for the games. They’ll have a familiar face joining them on the trip; coach Nicole Gauthier is a member of the Prince Albert Riding Club and has been a strong competitor in her own right, having competed at the American Paint Horse Association World Show.

The games in Fort Worth have been scheduled for June 27 to July 3.
