Candle Lake wins high praise

While it may come as no suprise to the thousands who visit Candle Lake each year, the popular retreat was named by travel website Expedia as one of their “12 Reasons to Visit the Prairies.”

Among the reasons given were the beautiful purple sand beaches, the golf course, and its restaurants

“Candle Lake beat out several other Saskatchewan spots as the most beautiful of the purple sand beaches. Aside from its good looks, we loved Candle Lake’s tight-knit community feel, plus its convenient amenities for travellers,” travel writer Carolyn Albee said. “We wanted to highlight places that captured both the beauty and friendly attitude of the prairies, and Candle Lake fit perfectly.”

The Candle Lake Golf Resort was singled out in the article for its proximity to a marina with boat rentals, a restaurant and accommodations. The golf course has been mentioned numerous times over the years as one of Saskatchewan’s best.

Candle Lake Mayor Borden Wasyluk said he was not surprised to see the beaches receive recognition. In addition to their natural beauty, the mayor said the beaches are very safe.

“We don’t have a beach to my knowledge anywhere where there is a sharp drop-off or a danger to small kids,” he said.

Wasyluik said Candle Lake has many other great things to offer visitors, including well-groomed snowmobile trails and the old trading post store at Fisher Creek, which is set to re-open soon.

‘They are re-opening it with a new concept,” Wasyluik said of the trading post. “I think it will attract a lot of people.”

Three other Saskatchewan locations were mentioned in the article: Athabasca Sand Dunes, Gravelbourg, and Mortlach.
