Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation kicks off annual convention

Volunteers from across the province have gathered to discuss their organization’s future.

The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation met for their 89th annual convention, hosted in Prince Albert this year. A variety of topics are expected to be discussed.

Heath Dreger, the provincial president of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation said this event allows his members to come together and discuss the future of the group.

“A gathering like this allows everyone to get all the information [about] all of the things that are happening in this province and come up to speed with all our programs and initiatives,” Dreger said. “It’s a chance for the members to have their voices heard and help direct the organization forward.”

The theme of this year’s event is “Habitat trust: your land, your legacy.” As such, the agenda is filled with topics like disturbance management, wildlife management plans covering pronghorns, moose, caribou and wild turkeys. The big game draw system will be discussed as well.

This year’s keynote speaker Dr. Alistair Bath will discuss land access restrictions in regards to hunting in the province.

Aquatic life also has a platform at this year’s gathering. From a presentation from a University of Regina student looking at the post release behavior of fish caught while ice fishing, to discussions about aquatic invasive species a wide variety of water based subjects will be addressed.

Dreger said last year, the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation threw their support behind the game management plan and species management plan. The organization also undertook land management responsibilities for the Fish and Wildlife Development Fund.  

“[We] ensure the habitat is maintained, protected and enhanced in some aspects for the betterment of wildlife in the province,” Dreger said.

Next year the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation will meet in Moose Jaw for the 90th annual convention.
