Northern Bears to auction ‘ugly Christmas sweaters’

Dec 19, 2017 | 4:00 PM

Intentionally ugly Christmas sweaters are becoming a holiday tradition, and the Prince Albert Northern Bears are getting in on the trend for a good cause.

The female Midget AAA team will be wearing specially-designed ugly Christmas sweaters during their Wednesday game against the Saskatoon Stars. The girls’ jerseys will be sold during the game through a silent auction, with the proceeds going to the Children’s Wish Foundation.

Team President Robin Wildey said the team wanted to give back to the community during the holidays.

“P.A. gives us so much. We thought this would be a good idea for us to give back,” Wildey said. “Everything that’s going to be raised is going right to the Wish Foundation.”

The sweaters, which were purchased for the team by the Saskachewan Goverment and General Employees’ Union, feature the Northern Bears’ logo, as well as an argyle pattern, pine trees and snowflake designs. Wildey contributed to the design personally, he said, with help from Source for Sports and Bauer. Even though the orange-and-black jerseys were designed with ugliness in mind, Wildey said they came out looking quite good.

“It turned out better than what we thought,” Wildey said with a laugh. “It’s actually not that bad.”

The team raised nearly $2,000 selling limited-edition pink jerseys for breast cancer last season, Wildey said, and this year they’re hoping to break that total. They’re also hoping for a win against their southern rivals during the game.

“I think we’re going to win,” Wildey said, “but Saskatoon and P.A. have a rivalry that’s just not going to go away.”

The puck drops at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at the Art Hauser Centre.
